LIBLIKAS (butterfly)
Did you know that in many Estonian folk tales butterfly was believed to be a symbol of the dead people’s soul?
This week’s summery weather has brought many colourful and graceful species out to spread their wings and have a taste of juicy nectar. Whether or not we believe them to be flying souls, let us lift your spirits with the tune composed by Heino Eller (1887-1970) who was a pioneer of contemporary Estonian music and a composition teacher for many Estonian composers, including Arvo Pärt.
This beautiful piece ‘Butterfly’ is performed by the London-based Estonian pianist Maksim Štšura.
