From 8 to 20 June, Estonia will host the NATO medical exercise Vigorous Warrior 2026. Organized by the Estonian Defence Forces, the NATO Centre of Excellence for Military Medicine and the Estonian Health Board, the exercise will train multinational medical support and civil-military cooperation in a realistic operational environment. Activities will take place primarily in Harju and Lääne-Viru counties.
“Vigorous Warrior is the pivotal exercise for the NATO Medical community. It brings Allies and Partners together to train medical support jointly, realistically, and in line with the demands of today’s operational environment. This kind of cooperation is essential to ensure that our medical support functions even in the most challenging circumstances,” said Brigadier General Dr. Jens E. K. Diehm, Director of the NATO Centre of Excellence for Military Medicine.
Vigorous Warrior 2026 is one of the largest international exercises taking place in Estonia this year, bringing together approximately 2,000 participants from 32 Allied and Partner nations. The exercise covers the full spectrum of military medical support in a conflict scenario, from planning to execution. Participants will train casualty management at the point of injury, casualty stabilization, evacuation, higher-level medical treatment, and continuity of care between different medical units and nations. The exercise also provides an opportunity to test innovative technological solutions, contribute to capability development, and strengthen interoperability among Allied and Partner forces.
“The fact that Vigorous Warrior is being hosted in Estonia this year is significant both for us and for our partners. Bringing the exercise to NATO’s eastern flank means that we are training medical support where Allied readiness is particularly important in today’s security environment,” said Colonel (in reserve) Tarmo Metsa, the director of the exercise on behalf of the Estonian Defence Forces. He added that, for Estonia, the exercise provides an opportunity to demonstrate the ability to organize a large-scale medical exercise together with Allied units and civilian healthcare partners in an environment that reflects the realities and lessons of today’s security situation.
In addition to military medicine, Vigorous Warrior 2026 places a strong emphasis on cooperation between civilian and military medical systems. Alongside military medical units, representatives from the civilian healthcare sector will participate in the exercise to train common procedures and ensure continuity of care during crisis and wartime scenarios. The exercise planning and execution incorporate as many lessons learned as possible from the Ukraine war.
Before, during, and after the exercise, members of the public may notice an increased presence of military vehicles on Estonian roads as well as unmanned aerial systems operating in the air. Various simulation devices, including blank ammunition, training grenades, and illumination flares, may be used throughout the exercise and may generate higher-than-normal levels of noise.
Vigorous Warrior is NATO’s largest multinational medical exercise series. Organized every two years by the NATO Centre of Excellence for Military Medicine in cooperation with a volunteer host nation, the exercise focuses on military medical support in a multinational environment, emphasizing interoperability, medical readiness, and cooperation between civilian and military medical systems.
