Minister of Defence Laanet: Joint Expeditionary Force makes a strong contribution to European security

Minister of Defence Kalle Laanet took part in a meeting of the leaders of the Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF), in London.

The leaders of the Joint Expeditionary Force discussed the security situation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, expressing their strong support for him in the defence of his country and people. The brutal military aggression launched by Putin against Ukraine was condemned, with the Russian Federation being called on to immediately stop its military attacks and end the obstruction of humanitarian aid to the war-stricken Ukrainian people.

At the meeting, an agreement was reached on how the Joint Expeditionary Force could further support Ukraine through military assistance and how to isolate Russia internationally.

“The will to further help Ukraine is very strong, and specific ways to coordinate and finance assistance were discussed. The full-scale assault by the Russian Federation on Ukraine has permanently changed European security and put us in a situation where all of our allies and partners need to further strengthen their military deterrence and defence capabilities. The whole of Ukraine is fighting bravely against this inhuman aggression; they have prepared for it both militarily and morally,” said Minister of Defence Laanet.

“The Joint Expeditionary Force has the capability to respond at sea, on land and in the air, and to support NATO’s collective defence, if required,” added the Minister of Defence.

The Joint Expeditionary Force is a coalition initiated and led by the United Kingdom, which also includes Estonia, Holland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, and Iceland. Areas of focus for the coalition are the Baltic Sea region, the High North, and the North Atlantic region. Upon activation of the Joint Expeditionary Force, Great Britain will provide the necessary command and control elements, which the Member States will supplement with their own capabilities.
