Q&A: Mari Kalkun in conversation with Simon Broughton at Kings Place

Songlines Encounters Festival 2019

Mari Kalkun demonstrates her instrument, the kannel, the Estonian version of the Baltic zither, similar to the Finnish kantele and talks to Songlines Editor-in-Chief Simon Broughton about the way she draws on the traditional music and stories of Võrumaa in the south of Estonia.

Her latest album Ilmamõtsan (In the Wood of the World) is strongly influenced by the forests which cover 56% of the country.
